Being Optimistic About Optimization

One question that comes to mind very often is: Are we talking too much about SEO? Perhaps not. For one thing, if so much is being said about search engine optimization online and offline, then there is definitely something there. Of course, there are two sides to this story also. There are those who swear by the benefits of SEO while others are skeptical. Then there are others who really understand the workings of SEO and, yet others, who know it is important, but are not sure how all of this works.

So it is never too early (or too late) to go back to the basics of search engine optimization and take a look at what it is really about. The quality of the results you can get out of your search engine optimization campaign is directly proportional to the goals you have set for your business. After all, search engine optimization is part of the bigger picture and the better everything fits together, the prettier the picture will be. Suffice to say, search engine optimization should not be put into place without planning and scrutiny if you are serious about getting results.

It is not entirely uncommon for site owners to feel that they did not get anything out of their search engine optimization campaign. But usually that is not because SEO doesn't work but because the campaign itself was weak. There might be site owners who start of optimizing their website and are disappointed because they do not find their site on the first page when they Google it the next day. Such a reaction comes from a misunderstanding of how SEO works. SEO is not a magic wand with which you can wave all your ranking troubles away. Careful planning and patience needs to follow the launch of your SEO campaign.

A big part of understanding search engine optimization is to understand that it cannot work on its own. The nature of Internet marketing is such that marketing and technology has to be merged. Many organizations find that marketing and web technology departments are still working separately. How can that work when SEO demands that marketing and technology needs to work together to succeed.

As mentioned earlier, it all boils down to organizational goals. Separating marketing and technology does not seem to do the trick. In fact, some go as far as to say that these two departments should work in the same office and take joint decisions. The success of such an arrangement would be to overcome individual goals and work towards organization goals.

All SEO efforts should be aimed at getting your website to top ranking on popular search engines. Now that might not seem too difficult a task but you have to consider that almost every other organization is trying to do the same. That is something a lot of site owners forget about when they start their SEO campaigns. Most probably your competitors are doing the same things you are doing to maintain high ranking. So who wins? There is no concrete answer for that. The fact is that SEO is also unpredictable and that is something site owners need to be prepared for.

Another thing to keep a look out for is that SEO is not easy. So if a firm is telling you that you can be on top on all search engines in next to no time, you know someone is taking you for a spin. The phrase “too good to be true” did not come out of nowhere. If it is too easy, it probably is not for real! Things to beware of are companies that promise you a number one ranking; these things cannot be guaranteed.

More often than not, site owners are not very well versed with the ways of SEO firms. This is what many SEO firms take advantage of. Having less or no knowledge about SEO does not mean that you always have to be part of the know-nots. The Internet is full of sources that will tell you what SEO is all about. You will find contradictory statements that might confuse you but don't worry this is just the first stage of research. Rest assured that everything on the Internet is not humbug. You can also move away from the Internet and speak to others who are already involved with SEO. Learn from their experiences.

When researching online, you will most definitely come across pages that will tell you that search engine optimization is of no use. Think of it this way: if it were indeed worthless, would it be all over the Internet? More importantly, would so many people spend money on something that gives back no results?

The fact is that there are many skeptics when it comes to search engine optimization. The “truth” about SEO, however, is that it will give you results if it is done well. Do not go to an SEO firm expecting magic, because there is nothing magical about it. It all comes down to planning, analysis and understanding the intricacies of how search engine optimization and search engines work.
